Florid(a)rt

Escaping London’s winter weather

2018 is not over yet, nor are my weekend gateways.

This time my destination is Miami, Florida.

The main reason for my trip was the Art Basel. This event is hosted in Basel (duh!), Hong Kong, Miami and few other capital cities around the world. The american version of this event brings together “leading galleries from North America, Latin America, Europe, Asia and Africa show significant work from the masters of Modern and contemporary art, as well as the new generation of emerging stars. Paintings, sculptures, installations, photographs, films, and editioned works of the highest quality are on display in the main exhibition hall” – (Art Basel website).

My schedule for this weekend was quite tight. I met my Floridian friends on day one and we hit the American Bakeries Company in the Art District first. This is an old Bakery warehouse converted in art studios and exhibitions center. Here, artists from diverse backgrounds work together, share the space and use the Art Basel weekend to host open house events to show their works.

Next stop was the Art Miami, in Downtown Miami. It’s the America’s modern and contemporary art fair market and is globally recognized as a primary destination for the acquisition of the most important works from the 20th and 21st centuries. This fair showcases the latest in terms of furnitures, jewelries, clothing, and sculptures. It’s fun to walk around each stand, but I suggest you wear comfortable shoes. It might take you hours to go through the entire exhibition.

After a quick lunch break at the Sushi Samba on Lincoln Road, we entered the actual Art Basel, located just a couple of hundred meters north of Lincoln Road.

You definitely need a couple of days to just visit Art Basel itself. It is a huge, huge, HUGE art exhibition. You’ll discover emerging artists from across the world as well as renown and quoted artists such as Pollock, Picasso and Olafur Eliasson to mention a few.

Day two was all about Pulse, and…chill. Too much art in two days. We needed to re-charge with some sun and cold drinks! So we did.

Last but not least, (and to be honest my favorite part of this weekend) was the Wynwood Graffiti exhibition, in the Wynwood art district.

I am a really strong supporter and big fan of graffiti artists and having a chance to wander around an entire city district and being surrounded by incredible, building-size graffiti, it’s been a wonderful experience.

It’s not just the graffiti that fascinated me, but also the vibes and the people that make this district unique. Hypster-Hip-Hop-Punk-Hippy characters populate the 8 main streets that make up the Wynwood art district. All around is a endless sequence of art galleries, shops, coffee places, restaurants, pop up stores and bars.

I am definitely coming back here next year. If you are interested in joining or participating to any of the art events going on during Art Basel, go check out the official websites:
